Scrubber Performance Comparison: Wet vs. Dry – Which One Fits Your Factory Best?
In industrial exhaust gas treatment equipment, the scrubber is often the first choice for many manufacturers.
But did you know? Scrubbers are not a one-size-fits-all solution. They can be broadly categorized into wet scrubbers and dry scrubbers, with different designs affecting treatment efficiency, maintenance costs, and applicable industries. This article will help you compare quickly and find the most suitable option.
Wet Scrubber
A wet scrubber uses liquids (commonly water or chemical solutions) to make full contact with exhaust gases, dissolving or absorbing pollutants for treatment and purification.
Advantages:
A dry scrubber uses adsorbents (such as activated carbon or lime) to capture pollutants without requiring circulating water.
Advantages:

Wet Scrubber
A wet scrubber uses liquids (commonly water or chemical solutions) to make full contact with exhaust gases, dissolving or absorbing pollutants for treatment and purification.
Advantages:
- Capable of treating various pollutants, including acidic/alkaline gases and particulates
- Excellent cooling effect for hot exhaust streams
- Wide applicability, such as electronics, metal surface treatment, and chemical processing industries
- Requires additional water and chemical resources
- Wastewater needs secondary treatment, increasing operating and maintenance costs
A dry scrubber uses adsorbents (such as activated carbon or lime) to capture pollutants without requiring circulating water.
Advantages:
- No wastewater generation, making maintenance simpler
- Small footprint, ideal for small to medium-sized plants
- Highly efficient at removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
- Adsorbents need regular replacement, leading to higher long-term costs
- Limited effectiveness for high-concentration acidic or alkaline gases
- If your production line emits complex gas mixtures, including acidic/alkaline gases or high-temperature exhaust, a wet scrubber is recommended.
- If space is limited and the exhaust mainly contains VOCs or low-concentration pollutants, a dry scrubber is more suitable.
